Google's updated crawl stats report offers valuable information.

Google's updated crawl stats report offers valuable information. SEOHost.net's COO, Terry Cane, shares her insight.

Terry Cane, COO of SEOHost.net (https://www.seohost.net), a leading domain registration, SSL service, and SEO hosting provider, today offered insight on a recent update to Google's Crawl Stats Report.

Intended for advanced users with websites consisting of a thousand pages or more, the Crawl Stats Report provides a detailed overview of how the search engine's crawlers interact with and index the content on a website. In addition to offering advanced insights into potential issues with search engine optimization, the data in the report can also offer advance warning of issues such as a misconfigured server or a cyberattack.

On November 24, Google released an update to its Crawl Stats Report, adding several new features:

  • The ability to group crawl data by response, file type, purpose, and Googlebot type.
  • More detailed information on website availability from Google's perspective.
  • Example URLs that indicate areas that crawl requests occurred.
  • The ability to view an over-time chart of crawl stats.
  • Retooled summaries and improved supports for domains and sites with multiple hosts.

"Google's Crawl Stats Report has always been valuable from an SEO perspective," says Cane. "It allows webmasters to take a more technical, comprehensive approach by diving deep into the specifics of how Google's crawlers engage with their content. This recent update makes it much simpler to do so, both by making the information in the report easier to understand and providing better categorization."

"It also contains several valuable new metrics, two of the more valuable being Discovery and Refresh," she continues. "The former is a measure of URLs crawled by Google that have never been seen before, while the latter measures the number of times Google has crawled pages to update content and look for new links. These can be used to determine why new pages aren't being crawled by Google, or if there's an issue with the SEO on a regularly-updated page."

Cane emphasizes, however, that most webmasters won't need to examine their SEO with this much depth.

"Ultimately, good content is still king," she concludes. "As long as you use the right keywords, have a fast website that's easy to navigate, and understand your audience, you likely won't need the Crawl Stats Report. However, for those with an overwhelming volume of content on their site, it offers both an excellent overview and valuable, in-depth analytics."
