As I write this I'm sitting on France's TGV train from Paris to Lyon. I'm one week into our European vacation, and so far it's been wonderful, with the exception of an unfortunate pickpocket incident in Paris's Chatelet metro station (my father-in-law was the victim, not me), and an ensuing long and somewhat fruitless conversation with the French gendarmerie. It's been a struggle getting back into SEM mode to write about search engines and whatnot. It's hard to believe that in San Jose, there's little happening that doesn't have to do with search engines.

You are probably wondering what the blazes is popular about a link. Well, in a word - plenty. SEO is becoming increasingly important to all who look to do business and use the Internet as a marketing tool. It is the path in which your market finds your offering. It has become almost a necessity for businesses to incorporate SEO in to their marketing plan. Many companies struggle with the decision on whether to hire a firm or conduct their SEO in-house. Unfortunately many companies lack the knowledge about SEO and assume it will be cheaper for them in the long run to hire someone "in-house".

For some companies this may be efficient while others the overlooking the hiring of a professional firm to SEO can be costly. It is as critical to your business health as if you were to feel that you could heal a fatal disease yourself because you have access to the Internet and books, instead of going to a highly trained physician. Now you laugh and say that would be absurd, but is the growth of your company worth the risk.

Most people when doing a search using a site like Google just enter in all the words they are searching for in the search box but there is a way to get more relevant results to what they are looking for. For example, in Google I juist entered in Jeffrey A. Solochek in the search box. I get 14,100 matches but when I enclose my name in quotes I get exactly 440 matching results. The reason is because without the quotes you are getting every site that has Jeffrey in it as well as every site that has Solochek in it. When you enclose everything in quotes then you will only get results that have my exact name on it.

Both pay-per-click and SEO are targeted to get your website placed as close to the top of search engine results as possible. One of the differences is that it takes minutes to set up a pay-per-click campaign versus months for a good SEO campaign.

Pay-Per-Click is a simple type of paid advertising that most search engines, including some of the largest ones, now offer. It requires a bid for a "per-click" basis, which translates to your company paying the bid amount every time the search engine directs a visitor to your site. There is the added bonus that when a per-click site sends your website traffic, your site often appears in the results of other prevalent search engines.
